Why Can’t I Lose Weight?

Man, this is so frustrating!  I have been there a few times in the past few years.  I would try to follow certain diets that I had success with prior to that and nothing would happen.  Of course I knew I was older, but that shouldn’t make any difference.

After a couple of weeks starving and eating things that I really wan’t thrilled about, I finally just gave up when I hadn’t lost any weight nor was there a change in the way my pants/clothes were fitting.  What is it about your body where you can’t lose weight?

Most of  the problem stems with out of whack hormones in your body and metabolism slow down.  Here are some tips that will considerably show you how to speed metabolism and beat the “I can’t lose weight” gang!

Low GI Diet gets Rid of Acne

I have noticed that since I started really watching myself and eating the low glycemic index foods, my face has really cleared up.  I was suffering from rosacea (self diagnosed of course) and it was really bothering me.  I have never had a problem with acne, but it seems that since I started peri menopause my face has just started to break out all the time.

I though this was interesting and happened to be “surfing” one day last week and found this research article about the low GI diet fighting acne!  What a coincidence.  Great article!

Low Glycemic Foods Index Diet Proven Best for Type 2 Diabetes

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to work on a long term basis with one of the best endocrinologists and medical doctors in the state with one of my diabetic patients.  To make a long story short, this patient had difficult to control diabetes and we really were having a rough time figuring out what to do to make a difference.

After pouring over this patient’s diabetic diet plans, food journals (kept by staff), A1C results, etc. the endocrinologist figured out that by following the “typical diabetic diet” of low fat, low cholesterol, low sugar diet – this was not adequate to control her blood sugars and that is why she was having so many blood sugar spikes. A low “sugar” diet does not necessarily mean a low glycemic, complex carbohydrate diet, so people are still eating high glycemic carbohydrates causing spikes in blood sugar.

Our endocrinologist put our patient on a low glycemic index diet.  It actually worked! The low GI foods index controlled her blood sugars.

Recently there have been studies and articles touting the low glycemic index diet being the best diet gor type 2 diabetics…

Low-Glycemic Index Diet for Diabetes – Type 2 diabetic people who ate a low-glycemic-index diet had greater blood sugar control after six months than diabetic peple who followed another weight loss diet.

Low glycemic diet can control type-2 diabetes – TheMedGuru – The study, whose findings are published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, involved 210 Type 2 diabetes patients who were put on a low glycemic diet or a high-fiber diet. Both type of diets were low in saturated and …

It’s interesting how 15 years ago (and I’m sure much longer than that) certain doctors (specifically endocrinologists) knew about the fascinating results the low glycemic index foods had on controlling blood sugars in diabetics.  These physicians were considered “mavericks” and “main stream” physicians continued to prescribe the diets that didn’t work and were actually harmful in the long run causing increases in cholesterol and heart disease.

Sugar Addiction-Yes, You Truly Can be Addicted!

I have dealt with trying to stop sugar carvings for years. It is an awful feeling when you are trying to cut down or stop eating sweets-not just candy, but breads, rolls, and any other type of carbohydrate that is considered “comfort food”. They all turn to simple sugar once inside your body.

Recently, sugar has been in the news as being finally being labeled as an addiction certain people (like women over 30!) are susceptible to. Just like any other addiction, your body has decided that it needs to have sugar, this is why we end up having these sugar cravings we can’t kick until we get what we are craving into our body.

Here is a wonderful article by Giselle Brand, a dietitian, on how to stop your sugar cravings. It’’s full of great information.

How to stop your sugar cravings?

Chronic dieters are particularly susceptible to erratic and uncontrollable sugar cravings. Do you put yourself on punishing diets and eat like a bird in the attempt to get to your goal weight by tomorrow? You may want to take a cold …

The only way I have been able to stop my sugar cravings is eating low glycemic index foods and giving my body all the nutrients it actually needs so the cravings are put at bay. It’s amazing how awful I feel when I start eating simple carbohydrates or “comfort foods”. My joint pain returns, I feel bloated, and I feel nauseated.

I have been there with the addiction and I still struggle at times, just like with any addiction, and give in. But I always try to remember how BAD giving in makes my body feel-there is a huge difference and my body literally feels like it’s rejecting the sugar.

It’s That Time of Year Again! I Will Get Rid of Belly Fat for Good!

How often have we all decided that after the Holidays we would make a new year’s resolution to lose the weight for good? I can’t count how many times I have said this same thing only to say it again the next year, and the year after, and the year after…I have vowed to lose the weight so many times, I can now pinpoint the part of my body that needs to lose the most – And this year is was to rid belly fat (along with the hips thighs and butt!) but mostly my fat stomach!

I think subconsciously by putting off the “diet” until after the Holidays, we are giving ourselves permission to pig out from Thanksgiving through the New Year! Well, that’s my theory of why I do it anyway. I immediately go for the “comfort food” and sweets because that is what I crave when I am stressed out, and the Holiday’s are a good time for me to get stressed out – running here, there, and everywhere fighting crowds and picking out gifts hoping the person is going to like what I pick out. I really don’t like the Holiday’s.

Well, I’ve decided, there is never a good time to start a diet and besides that, I don’t want to “diet” anymore! After my body became a pear shape and I was unable to lose the weight, I came to the realization that I needed to make a change in my lifestyle. I have been on low carb diets which really worked well, but it was really tough to stay on them.

As a nurse, I work with diabetics all the time and I remembered how putting diabetics on a low glycemic index diet to stabilize their blood sugars also allowed them to lose weight without even trying. I decided to give this a try because I was exhibiting all of the signs for insulin resistance and was afraid I would be diagnosed with diabetes in the next year if I didn’t do something, so why not this?

Once I researched the low glycemic foods, I was amazed at the foods I could eat – even fat – and not become hungry. Your body needs fat to get rid of fat. With the decrease in the high glycemic foods I was eating, my body couldn’t store the excess sugar into fat for later use, it was utilizing everything I was eating for energy and started to use my fat stores for more energy once the sugar wasn’t floating around in my body anymore.

In less than two weeks my joint pain had significantly decreased and I actually felt like I had more energy and was in a better mood. As a nurse and a person with first hand experience, I truly recommend the low glycemic diet for anyone. You eat real foods and avoid the chemicals that are being put into our foods, what could be better?
